Figure Skaters pass tests in recent Test Day
YSC is part of new Skate Canada Pilot Project
Lorelei Murphy and Yarmouth Skating Club are taking part in a Skate Canada STARSKate Testing Pilot Project.
YSC is one of the only Club’s east of Ottawa taking part in a new Skate Canada Pilot Project. STARSkaters/Figure Skaters previously could only be tested by an official Skate Canada Judge at an official Skate Canada Test Day.
So sometime skaters had to wait until a test day came around and travel to another arena or we as a Club had to pay a judges expenses (mileage,food and accomidations) to get a judge to come to our Club.The judges are volunteers but their expenses do get paid by the Club holding the test day. Usually this fee is divided among the skaters taking tests. So in this old system there could be barriers that may prevent a skater from taking a test. Travel to another arena,expenses related to travel or expenses to having a Judge travel to our area.
In this new Pilot project Skate Canada has done 2 things.
1. They have brought in Pre-Preliminary Tests to bridge the gap between CANSkate and STARSkate (some of these tests require a lot of new skating skills and sometimes can take up to a year for the skater to master) It was felt by Skate Canada that this type of test will teach more skills and give the young skaters a sense of accomplishment and participation.
2. They have made it so an approved Skate Canada Coach (in our case Lorelei Murphy) can conduct the testing during a regular skating session. Therefore the Club and the skaters do not incur extra expenses as they had to before and the skaters do not have to wait for a test day to come around. Once Lorelei deems they are ready she can test them
Lorelei conducted testing at the Mariners Centre last week and the following skaters passed tests:
Isabella Dillman,Reese Nickerson and Kate Fiander all passed their Pre-Preliminary Dance Test
Shayleigh Doucet,Courtney Thorburn and Chelsea Fitzgerald all passed their Pre-Preliminary FreeSkate Test
Courtney Thorburn passed her Preliminary FreeSkating Elements Test
Shayleigh Doucet and Isabell Olsen both passed the Baby Blues Preliminary Dance Test
